Forty valiant individuals sacrificed their lives in the first victory against terrorism on United States soil on September 11. Refusing to allow their plane to be used as another missile against their fellow Americans, these heroes took back control of the destiny of Flight 93 from the terrorists, and left a legacy of honor and courage. We can now see a National Memorial built in their honor in Shanksville, PA.
The HALO Foundation of Akron, Ohio partnered with the National Parks Foundation to assist in the fund-raising efforts for the building of this incredible memorial. Through the “93 cents for Flight 93” campaign, school children worked together with seniors from their local communities to raise some of these monies. Students explored the concepts of courage, heroism, and patriotism. These school activities not only inspired students to fully understand the concept of sacrifice, but also to appreciate the value of unselfish behavior in a contemporary climate of self-indulgence.
